Karla Pimentel Maia has 16 years of practical experience in Geotechnical Engineering and dedicated 07 years of her academic training to master's and doctorate studies. Her expertise and interests are earth and tailings dams, open pits, geotechnical monitoring, geosynthetics, and geotechnical risk management. She worked at geotechnical consulting companies in Brazil (Pimenta de Ávila Consultoria), Chile (Geoconsult Latinoamerica), and Australia (Coffey Geotechnics).
From 2016 to 2020, Karla worked as an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil, where she lectured in the disciplines of Soil Mechanics, Fundamentals of Geotechnics, and Environmental Geotechnics, supervised students in the preparation of undergraduate monographs (12), co-supervised master's theses (05) and carried out research activities.
From January 2020 to December 2021, Karla worked as a specialist engineer, and since 2022, she has been a coordinator of the geotechnical team at Vale's South Corridor Geotechnical Monitoring Center (GMC). Nowadays, she actively collaborates in research and development in geotechnical monitoring in dams and open pits, writes technical articles, and participates in undergraduate, master's, and doctorate evaluation boards.
