MATTHEW DAMHUIS
Matthew (Matt) Damhuis is a Senior Hydrogeologist and Water Management Specialist based in the Johannesburg office of Piteau Associates. As a Technical Specialist in Water Management at Kumba Iron Ore Matt was responsible for all water management related activities Sishen and Kolomela Mines, including dewatering of groundwater for safe mining activities, distribution of water to internal and external stakeholders, as well as strategic development and management of water resources to ensure beneficial and sustainable water use and management across the company’s operations. His role was to ensure operations followed best practices for water management and dewatering activities at the operation and were aligned to the Kumba Iron Ore Water Strategy, as well as to manage various internal and external stakeholder expectations in terms of dewatering, water supply and water management activities. Matt received the CEO Special Award for Rain Readiness Plan Development and Implementation at Kumba Operations. He also developed an Adaptive Water Management Standard and Revised Water Management Vision and Strategy for Kumba Iron Ore As the Specialist in Hydrogeology and Water Management at Sishen Mine Matt was responsible for the operational management of the groundwater dewatering operations, surface water management and maintenance of the mine water balance. Matt managed a team of two hydrogeologists within the section and coordinated the required activities between various stakeholders across the mining operation, including mine planning, mining operations and engineering support services to ensure the effective dewatering of groundwater to allow safe mining operations, sufficient water availability for mining and beneficiation activities, as well as strategic optimization of the mine water balance to minimize Sishen’s impact on the environment while maximizing the mine’s contribution to the neighbouring communities and stakeholders. Matt was responsible for stabilization of the dewatering abstraction rates and pump availabilities at Sishen, in addition to the design, implementation and management of surface water management processes and internal numerical modelling capabilities in the Hydrogeology Section.
